2006: The south Maui beach running from north Kihei to Maalaea is a known sea turtle nesting area. Community volunteers erected a fence between North Kihei Road and the beach in 1993 to prevent turtles from crossing into traffic. Scouts from Troop 22 joined the periodic fence repair efforts in June, 2006.
